Guest Post: Toronto-Based Musician and Fashion Designer Sophie Powers, NYC’s Latest Obsession

Sophie Powers @sophiep0wers ready to make the crowd obsessed with her new song

Sophie Powers is a pop-rock musician and fashion designer from Toronto, Ontario, who is focused on pairing electronic/hyperpop beats with gritty, driving rock sounds. On March 15th, I had the pleasure of photographing her in New York City at Terminal 5 while she supported the band Waterparks on the second strand of their Sneaking Out Of Heaven Tour.

She combines classic, uplifting pop beats along with the more dissonant and distorted aspects of rock music. Powerful vocals and emotional lyrics make for exceptional, creative music that offers a breath of fresh air to anyone looking to delve into the pop-rock music scene. Sophie Powers’ music continues to find popularity among Gen-Z, and is growing rapidly.

Don’t be fooled by her love of colours and almost video game-like costumes and outfits; Sophie Powers is a force to be reckoned with in her music. She opened the set with her newest song, "Obsessed", complimenting the exciting, electronic beat with an outfit the fashion designer created herself, and of course received compliments from the crowd over it. Halfway through, she would pick up a hot pink guitar and perform “Bathroom Floor”. She closed the set with “Greed”, leaving the crowd buzzing in excitement while they awaited the rest of the show to continue.

I focused on the bright colours of the lights to compliment her energetic pop sound. While keeping with the quirky angles to further accentuate her unique style and beat, I added in a few black and white photos of Sophie Powers, as an artist like her will definitely be able to stand the test of time.

I was deeply honoured to be able to photograph an artist like Sophie Powers. Having seen her perform before in Toronto, I got to experience her energy firsthand and later would get to freeze the moments in time when her energy poured out and washed over the crowd.

Sophie Powers is a force of nature who is bringing a new energy to the ever-changing world of pop-rock. Having first experienced her energy from the crowd, she made everyone in the audience want to dance and left them reeling with excitement. Even in the photo pit, her liveliness made me want to dance more than take photos, and even out of the photo pit and into the balcony, her vivacity reached every corner of the venue. With a bold take on music and an avant-grade fashion sense to go along with it, it’s safe to say that Sophie Powers will be making it a long way in the music industry.
